Spaced repetition is a learning technique built around a simple, well-documented fact: information reviewed after a delay is retained far better than information reviewed immediately or crammed all at once. The underlying idea dates back to Hermann Ebbinghaus's 19th-century research on the "forgetting curve," which showed memory decays fastest right after learning something and then levels off — meaning a review timed just before you'd otherwise forget does more to lock it in than several reviews packed close together. Modern spaced-repetition tools apply this by increasing the gap between reviews each time you recall something successfully.
Number Neuron builds a version of this directly into its scoring instead of just teaching arithmetic. Every equation you construct to hit a target number is logged, and at rounds 3, 7, and 15 the game interrupts with a recall check — asking whether you remember the specific equation you built several rounds earlier, with the gap between building it and being asked about it growing larger as the game goes on. Scoring reinforces the same idea from another angle: typing the target number directly scores zero, while building something with more operators and fewer plain numbers scores higher, because equations you actually construct yourself are the ones you're being asked to recall later.

Not exactly, and it's worth being upfront about that. Real spaced-repetition systems space reviews over days or weeks, matched to how quickly you personally forget something. This game compresses that idea into a few minutes and a few rounds — genuinely testing whether spacing helps recall versus immediate repetition, just at a much faster timescale than a real study schedule would use.
