At a 12-foot viewing distance: the conservative bound is 12 × 12 ÷ 2.5 = 57.6 inches, rounding to about 58 inches. The immersive bound is 12 × 12 ÷ 1.5 = 96 inches. The midpoint of that range, about 77 inches, is a reasonable single number to shop around if a range feels too open-ended — but the honest answer for a 12-foot room spans roughly 58 to 96 inches depending which philosophy you follow.
THX's recommendation is built around filling more of your field of view for a cinema-like, immersive experience, which pushes toward a larger screen at a given distance. Older guidance, with roots in SMPTE viewing-angle standards developed for lower-resolution broadcast content, is more conservative — a smaller screen was historically safer because sitting close to a large low-resolution image made scan lines and compression artifacts more visible.
