This calculator finds your range's pitch center — the midpoint, in semitones, between your lowest and highest comfortable note — and compares it to the midpoint of six standard reference voice ranges. Whichever reference range's center sits closest to yours is reported as your classification. This is a simplified, range-only approach; real vocal classification by a voice teacher also considers timbre (tone color) and where your voice's passaggio (register transition) naturally falls, not just how far up and down you can sing.

A range of C3 (MIDI 48) to A4 (MIDI 69) has a midpoint of (48 + 69) ÷ 2 = 58.5. Comparing that to each reference range's own midpoint — Bass at 52, Baritone at 57, Tenor at 60, Contralto at 64, Mezzo-soprano at 69, Soprano at 72 — the closest match is Baritone (57), only 1.5 semitones from 58.5, closer than Tenor's 60 (1.5 away too, but Baritone is checked first in a tie). This range also spans 69 − 48 = 21 semitones, or 21 ÷ 12 = 1.75 octaves.
The six reference ranges aren't strictly separated by an obvious gap — a Tenor's range (C3-C5) and a Contralto's (E3-E5) overlap substantially, for instance. Vocal range alone doesn't map cleanly onto a single classification; timbre and vocal weight (a lighter or heavier default tone quality) are what ultimately separate ranges that look similar on paper, which is exactly why this calculator's approximate range-only method won't always match a formal voice teacher's assessment.
Entering your absolute vocal extremes — the highest squeak or lowest growl you can force out, rather than notes you can actually sing with control and good tone — inflates your range and can skew the classification toward a voice type wider than your functional singing range really supports. Another common mistake: measuring your range once, right after waking up or without warming up, when most voices sit measurably lower and narrower than after a proper vocal warm-up.
Tessitura — the range where a voice sounds and feels its best, which is often narrower than its full physical range from lowest to highest note.
Passaggio — the transition zone between vocal registers (like chest voice and head voice), where tone quality often shifts noticeably.
Timbre — the characteristic tone color of a voice, independent of pitch, that's a major factor in real vocal classification beyond just range.
Octave — the interval between a note and another with exactly double or half its frequency; used here to express range span in a more intuitive unit than raw semitones.

Real voice classification also weighs timbre (tone color), where the voice's passaggio (register break) sits, and tessitura (where the voice sounds best, not just where it can physically reach) — factors this calculator can't measure from two note inputs alone. Treat the result as a reasonable starting estimate, not a substitute for a vocal teacher's assessment.
This calculator matches your entered range's midpoint to whichever reference voice type's midpoint is closest — it's a best-fit by pitch center, not a rule requiring your exact range to fall entirely within the reference range. A wide range spanning parts of two adjacent classifications can land closer to either one depending on exactly where its center falls.
