Beats per minute (BPM) is simply how many beats fit into 60,000 milliseconds. If you know the time between two beats — the beat interval, in milliseconds — the conversion is one division:
BPM = 60,000 ÷ (milliseconds per beat)
Tap tempo works the same math in reverse: instead of typing in a known interval, you tap along to a beat, the calculator measures the time between your taps, and averages those intervals into one beat-interval figure to plug into the same formula. A single interval between two taps is noisy — a musician's hand rarely lands within a few milliseconds of true rhythmic accuracy — so averaging several taps in a row smooths that noise out into a much more reliable reading.
Tap-tempo footswitches became common on delay and reverb effects pedals starting in the 1980s and 1990s, letting a performer set a delay's repeat time by tapping a foot switch in rhythm instead of turning a knob and guessing at a millisecond value. The underlying idea — timing an average interval between taps and converting it to a musical time value — is exactly the math this calculator performs, just applied to tempo (BPM) instead of a delay repeat time.
A single pair of taps captures one interval, but human tapping has natural jitter — even a musician with excellent internal timing will land a few milliseconds early or late on any individual tap. Averaging the last several intervals cancels out that random variation in both directions, which is why this calculator keeps a rolling window of your last 8 recorded intervals rather than using only your most recent tap.
If you already know a track's beat interval — for example, from a DAW's tempo detection, a delay pedal's display, or a spec sheet — the Manual Input field skips tapping entirely and applies the same 60,000-divided-by-interval formula to give you the BPM immediately.
Tapping only twice before reading the result is the most common issue — two taps give exactly one interval, with no averaging to smooth out timing error, so the displayed BPM can swing noticeably from one tap-pair to the next. Tapping along to a strong off-beat (a snare hit on beat 3, for instance, rather than the actual beat 1) will still produce a musically valid tempo reading, just phase-shifted from where you might expect — the BPM number itself is unaffected by which beat you tap on, only by the spacing between your taps.

With steady tapping over 4 or more taps, tap tempo is generally accurate within 1-2 BPM of a true metronome reading. Averaging more taps smooths out normal human timing variance, but very few taps or inconsistent tapping increases the error.
A rolling window keeps the reading responsive to a tempo change instead of averaging over an ever-growing, increasingly stale history. If a song speeds up or slows down partway through, averaging every tap since the start would make the displayed BPM slow to catch up.
