How Freight Class Density Is Calculated

Freight density is the shipment's weight per cubic foot of space it occupies. It's calculated in two steps — first the volume in cubic feet, then weight divided by that volume:

$$\text{Density (lb/ft}^3\text{)} = \frac{\text{Weight}}{\text{Volume}}$$

L, W, H: the length, width, and height of one piece, in inches.

Qty: the number of identical pieces in the shipment.

Weight: the shipment's total weight, in pounds, across all pieces.

1728: the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot, used to convert the volume to cubic feet.

Once density is known, it's mapped to an approximate freight class using a commonly cited density-to-class reference table — denser shipments (more weight per cubic foot) get a lower, cheaper-to-ship class, while light, bulky shipments get a higher, more expensive class.

Worked Example

A single piece measuring 24 × 24 × 30 inches, weighing 400 lbs total: volume = (24 × 24 × 30) ÷ 1728 = 10.0 ft³. Density = 400 ÷ 10.0 = 40.0 lb/ft³. Looking up 40.0 lb/ft³ in the reference table below lands between the 35 and 50 lb/ft³ breakpoints, giving an estimated freight class of 55.

Why "Density Alone" Isn't the Whole Story

Official NMFC freight classification is built from four transportation characteristics, not one: density, stowability, handling, and liability. Density is the easiest of the four to compute from dimensions and weight alone, which is why a density-to-class reference table like the one above is a useful estimate — but the other three characteristics can shift a shipment's real assigned class up or down. An oddly shaped item that wastes trailer space (poor stowability), something fragile or requiring special equipment (handling difficulty), or high-value or hazardous freight (liability) can all be classified differently than density alone would suggest. This calculator only has access to weight and dimensions, so treat its output as a starting estimate for budgeting a shipment, not a binding classification — always confirm the actual class with your carrier or freight class database before booking.

Common Freight Class Mistakes

Entering per-piece weight instead of total shipment weight (or vice versa) is the most common input error — this calculator expects Total Weight across all pieces in the Quantity field, and multiplies volume by quantity to match. Treating the estimated class as final is another: shippers who book based on a density-only guess sometimes get reclassified (and rebilled) by the carrier once the shipment is physically inspected. Finally, mixing centimeters or other units into inch-based fields silently produces a meaningless density figure.
